My Most Unique Halloween Costumes

by Tech M on August 9, 2011

Halloween at our house was a wonderful time! My brothers and I would be outside on the front steps, carving our pumpkins, anxiously awaiting the annual Halloween Parade! All the Elementary school kids in costume, and the Middle and High School bands would line up in the school parking lot, right behind the Chief of Police in his white car. We marched through town and back to school in our Halloween costumes, past the judges’ stand, with all the parents, grandparents, and younger brothers and sisters watching and waving as we went by. In our family, all of our costumes were homemade, and yet we almost always won a prize or two for best costume! Mom would spend hours and hours sometimes, making our costumes out of whatever we had at the house. Sometimes it would be from a favorite movie or television show, other times a character from a book or cartoon. I remember being The “Flying Nun” one year, complete with the hat with ‘wings’, and once I went as Cinderella – half of my costume was a beautiful gown and makeup on that half of my face and my hair done up, the other half was a dress of rags, dirt on that half of my face and my hair ratty and dirty. Another year I won as Raggedy Ann. My brothers won as scarecrows, werewolves, and one even took first place as a little old lady, complete with high-top button-up boots! All in all, our homemade Halloween costumes, thrown together with things we had around the house were always some of the best in the town!
